Sneads Ferry grew up as a fishing village where the New River meets the ocean, and it still feels that way at Fulcher's Landing and along the working waterfront that hosts the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival every year. Today the community also includes newer neighborhoods filled with Camp Lejeune families, plus homes just over the NC 210 bridge from North Topsail Beach. What all of them share is exposure: salt air off the river and the sound, open marsh and water that let wind build up speed, and hurricane season every year.
Life Construction & Roofing replaces roofs throughout Sneads Ferry, and we build each one for that exposure.
What wears out a Sneads Ferry roof
- Homes facing the New River, the Intracoastal Waterway or open marsh take wind with nothing in the way. Uplift starts at the eaves, rakes and ridge, which is why those edges fail first.
- Salt settles on the roof and speeds up rust on nails, flashing, vents and drip edge. Many leaks near the water come from corroded metal, not the shingles themselves.
- Long, humid summers bake south-facing slopes and keep shaded slopes damp, which leads to granule loss on one side of the house and algae on the other.
- Many older Sneads Ferry roofs have been through several tropical systems. Even when they look fine from the street, seal strips and decking may not be.
- with taller walls and more exposed roof planes, which see higher wind loads than a ranch house set back in the trees.
How we build a replacement for the New River coast
Every job starts with a full tear-off so we can inspect and repair the decking. We re-nail the deck to code, replace soft sheathing, and seal the deck before underlayment. New drip edge, starter strips and ridge components go on every roof, and all wall, chimney and valley flashing is replaced, not reused. Where salt exposure is high, we use corrosion-resistant fasteners and accessories.
As a FORTIFIED installer, we can build your roof to the FORTIFIED Roof standard, which focuses on sealing the deck, stronger attachment and better edge details so the roof holds up in hurricane wind and rain. Eligible homeowners may qualify for a FORTIFIED roof grant of up to $6,000. We check eligibility with you before the project starts. Learn more on our FORTIFIED roof page.
Shingles or metal?
We are an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor and TAMKO Pro Gold certified, and our shingle systems carry a 50-year materials warranty. Some Sneads Ferry homeowners, especially on the water, prefer metal for its long life and fewer seams. We install both and will explain the real trade-offs for your house, including how each handles salt air. See metal roofing in Jacksonville and Onslow County.
Permits in Sneads Ferry
Sneads Ferry is unincorporated Onslow County, so there is no town permit office. Building permits and inspections go through Onslow County Planning & Development. Under North Carolina law, many like-for-like roof replacements under the state cost threshold with no structural work don't need a building permit, but deck replacement, structural repairs and larger projects can. Waterfront and flood-zone properties can also have county floodplain requirements. We confirm what your address needs and take care of it.
